Dasuquin for Dogs: What to Know

There are several Dasuquin varieties to talk to your veterinarian about.

Unfortunately, dog osteoarthritis comes with achy joints. But, certain supplements, like Dasuquin, help pups feel more comfortable and get them back to regular movement.

There are several varieties of Dasuquin, so it’s important to get the right one for your pet. Here are the different versions you should ask your veterinarian about.

What’s Dasuquin for dogs?

Dasuquin is a supplement that combines glucosamine and chondroitin to promote dogs’ healthy joints.

“Glucosamine is a building block for hyaluronic acid, one of the main components of joint tissue,” Dr. Elizabeth Devitt, DVM, a general practice veterinarian and veterinary consultant for Fetch, explains. “Chondroitin is an element of cartilage, aka the cells that line the joints surfaces. It helps block enzymes that could harm the cartilage and draws fluid into joint tissue to reduce friction during movement.”

There are a few varieties of the supplement, including classic Dasuquin, Dasuquin with MSM, Dasuquin Advanced and Dasuquin Advanced with ESM. Your vet can advise you on if Dasuquin is right for your dog and which variety is best.

What’s Dasuquin with MSM?

Suppose your veterinarian thinks your pup needs a level-up from Dasuquin. In that case, they might recommend Dasuquin MSM, which is just that — the classic supplement with methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), which helps to reduce inflammation and block pain, added to keep your dog’s joints in tip-top shape.

“MSM serves as a source of sulfur, which is an important molecule in the makeup of collagen, a part of healthy joints,” Dr. Devitt says. “It’s also important in glutathione, an antioxidant that protects against cell damage.”

Classic Dasuquin and the MSM version can be purchased without a prescription, but we strongly recommend checking in with your veterinarian before starting your dog on any new supplements.

How about Dasuquin Advanced for dogs?

Dasuquin Advanced contains everything that the MSM version has, with the addition of turmeric, alpha-lipoic acid and manganese.

These ingredients provide joint and antioxidant support and reinforce cartilage matrix production, respectively.

What’s Dasuquin Advanced with ESM?

Dasuquin Advanced with ESM is like the advanced version with one additional ingredient: eggshell membrane (ESM).

This ingredient increases joint comfort and functions because it contains high glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen and hyaluronic acid.

How can I tell the right Dasuquin dosage for my dog?

Every variety of Dasuquin is available as either a chewable tablet or a soft chew, except for Dasuquin Advanced with ESM, which is only available as a chew.

Dogs of any size can have joint issues, so Dasuquin is available for small, medium and large pups. Talk to your veterinarian about which supplement is best depending on your pet’s weight, and refer to the back of the package for dosage instructions.

“Both glucosamine and chondroitin require ‘loading doses,’ which means that higher amounts need to be given to reach useful levels in the joints when supplements are first started, and then maintenance servings can be given,” Dr. Devitt explains.

This means your dog will likely be on a higher dose of Dasuquin for 4 to 6 weeks. But it can take several weeks before you notice Dasuquin’s beneficial effects. Your vet can walk you through this processes to be sure your dog is getting safe dosage.

Are there any side effects of Dasuquin in dogs?

The great news is that Dasuquin's side effects, including mild gas and softer stool, are uncommon. However, drug interactions are possible, so it’s essential to ensure your veterinarian knows about all your pet's medications and supplements when inquiring about Dasuquin.
